FALK, J. L. AND M. TANG. Nonuremic hyperosmolality produced by sodium depletion• PHYSIOL. BEHAV. 10(4) 793-799, 1973.-Rats were rapidly sodium depleted by a 4-hr intraperitoneal dialysis against isotonic glucose, and various serum and urine measures were taken at 4, 12 and 20 hr from the start of dialysis for dialyzed and control groups. No food or water was allowed during this postdialysis period. At 4 hr, dialyzed animals were hyponatremic, hypovolemic, hyposmolal and oliguric. This was followed by a general picture of renal sodium and chloride saving and a return of relatively normal urine volume. Plasma volume and electrolyte concentration became approximately normal as did urine glucose and urea clearances. However, serum osmolality progressively increased relative to control groups, and at 20 hr was 22.5 mOsm greater than controls. Of this difference, 15.1 mOsm was not accounted for by the osmotic equation calculated from serum sodium, glucose and blood urea nitrogen. These body water distortions in concentration and locus are discussed in the light of increased water and NaCl intakes observed in our previous research.

Epithelial sodium channel abundance is decreased by an unfolded protein response induced by hyperosmolality
Large shifts of osmolality occur in the kidney medulla as part of the urine concentrating mechanism. Hyperosmotic stress profoundly challenges cellular homeostasis and induces endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. Here, we examined the unfolded protein response (UPR) in hyperosmotically-challenged principal cells of the kidney collecting duct (CD) and show its relevance in controlling epithelial s...

The amiloride-sensitive epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) plays a key role in sodium reabsorption in the collecting ducts. We examined ENaC mRNA distribution along the nephron and acute effects of vasopressin and hyperosmolality on ENaC mRNA expression. ENaCalpha, beta, and gamma mRNA expressions were observed in cortical, outer medullary and initial inner medullary collecting ducts (CCD, OMCD a...
متن کاملAT(1)-receptor blockade in the hypothalamic PVN reduces central hyperosmolality-induced renal sympathoexcitation.
Autonomic neurons in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) are innervated by osmotic-sensitive regions of the lamina terminalis, receive input from ANG II-containing cells, and express AT(1) ANG II receptors. Therefore, we hypothesized that ANG II actions within the PVN could underlie hyperosmolality-induced increases in renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA). In anesthetized barorece...

W balance is measured by changes in osmolality. Osmolality is the number of osmotically active particles (osmoles) per liter of solution. (Osmolarity is expressed per kilogram). Hypo-osmolality indicates an excess of water relative to osmoles; hyperosmolality indicates water deficiency. The serum osmolality [in milliosmols per liter (mosm/L)] can be calculated by the following formula: Serum os...
